Engine failure in Canakkale Strait

On Feb 5, 2020, at 11.30 p.m. the 'Recep Kuru', while en route from Yuzhny to Ravenna, suffered an engine failure during the Canakkale Strait transit at Kilitbahir point. The vessel dangerously drifted close to the shore. The coastal safety tug 'Turkeli' attended the incident scene in order to provide assistance for the vessel and ensure strait traffic safety. Subsequently, the vessel was secured by the tug and a technical team. The vessel was taken to Karanlik Liman anchorage and dropped anchor on Feb 6 at 1 a.m. A fine was imposed due to the breach of the safe passage regulations. Repairs have commenced by the crew. Upon completion, the state surveyors will attend on board in order to verify the final repair status. The vessel remained stationary in pos. 40° 1.61' N 026° 18.37' E as of Feb 7.

m/v Recep Kuru ran aground at 1035LT on Oct 18 2011, while leaving port Temryuk, Azov sea, with pilot on board. Vessel grounded on a mud bottom by bow, with 30 centimeter draft loss. At 1510 same day vessel was refloated with the help of three port tugs and docked at berth No 51 for diver inspection. Vessel loaded with 3000 mt of wheat. Presumably vessel is undamaged.
