Yacht was pinned against ferry
A yacht was nearly sucked underneath the 'Sandbank Ferry' as the skipper, aged in his 70s, had tried to beat the chain ferry service in Poole Harbour by steering his 30ft sailboat in front of it. But it instead got pulled by the tide and swept into the vortex of swirling water produced by the much larger vessel. The yacht became pinned up against the side of the ferry and almost dragged under it. The pensioner had to climb on to the ferry due to the risk of his yacht going down. A passing RIB then tried to rescue the sailor, only to get stuck as well. aFter around half-an-hour the diving catamaran 'Rocket' arrived on the scene and threw a rope towards the dinghy and towed it to safety. The crew then returned and pulled the yacht clear of the ferry. The Poole RNLI arrived at the scene after the rescue and retrieved the boat before returning it to its owner. Chain ferry suffered technical fault
The 'Sandbank Ferry' suffered a mechanical fault on Aug 9, 2021, which stopped the ferry operating between Sandbanks and South Haven. Buses were having to divert via the inland route, which added around 40 to 50 minutes to the journey time. The ferry was back up and running after the broken jockey wheel was replaced.
