Grounding off San Andres Island

Tue Mar 10 09:49:47 CET 2020 Timsen

The 'Red Duchess' ran aground while approaching the port of San Andres Island, Colombia, in the afternoon of March 7, 2020, upon its arrival from Puerto Moin, Costa Rica. Immediately the General Maritime Directorate through the Captaincy of Puerto de San Andrés activated the emergency protocol to address the situation. The grounding did not affect the maritime and port operations of the island, and the entry and exits of other vessels continued with the support of the maritime traffic control tower of the Maritime Authority and Coast Guard of the National Navy. Dimar launched an investigation to determine the causes of the accident. As of March 9, the ship was still aground. RNLI crew honoured for saving six lives

Wed Jun 22 08:29:39 CEST 2011 arnekiel

A RNLI crew who saved six lives and prevented a major environmental disaster have been singled out for praise by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. The crew from Mallaig were presented in front of more than 100 people attending the RNLI’s annual awards ceremony in Perth last week. A video was shown highlighting the role they played in a shout lasting more than 11 hours during which they battled 50mph winds to stop the ‘Red Duchess’, a 76-metre coaster carrying coal, from going aground on the island of Rum after the vessel had suffered complete machinery failure. Mallaig’s all-weather RNLI lifeboat ‘Henry Alston Hewat’ was launched on November 2, 2010 into the teeth of a gale – the coastguard’s emergency towing vessel ‘Anglian Prince’ would not arrive for six hours - and set up a tow.

The "Red Duchess" on Nov 17, 2010, at 1 a.m. lost part of its deck cargo when she was three miles south of Carnsore Point in County Wexford. The logs washed overboard in stormy conditions. The vessel, which has a crew of six, continued to proceed from Southampton to its original intended destination Youghal.
