Modern slavery bulker detained in Rotterdam

The trade union FNV Havens has detained the "Vita Kosmos" after its arrival in Rotterdam's Europoort on Oct 14, 2017. The Philippine crewgot paid only 180 Euros wages per month, a form of modern slavery. Together with inspectors of the International Trade Union ITF, the work on the "Vita Kosmos" was put to a halt on Oct 17. The inspectors were already on board on Oct 16 to try to check the salaries but were sent away by the shipping company. There was also the suspicion that the crew even paid the shipping company to work on board as a kind of loan, leaving them only a small part of their salary. However, the ITF could not fix this yet. The ship was being held at a terminal in Europoort until the company has made new arrangements with the union about salaries.
