20 tons marijuana seized in Mediterranean
Italian police have seized 20 tons of marijuana with an estimated street value of £250m after boarding the "Adam" in the Mediterranean. The haul, which was thought to be the biggest ever of its kind at sea, was intercepted by two Italian customs vessels after it sailed close to the island of Pantelleria. Officials had been tipped off that the "Adam" was carrying the marijuana after intelligence from the Maritime Analysis Operations Centre (MAOC) in Lisbon, which deals with drugs shipments within the European Union. The operation began with officers in Morocco watching as the ship was loaded with more than 800 packets of the drug weighing 26 kg, which were wrapped in sacks and on the top deck under tarpaulin covers. The ship was tracked by radar for several days but no action could be taken until the Adam entered Italian waters, just off the coast of Pantelleria, an island off the coast of Sicily. The ship was bound for Tobruk in Libya and was later escorted to the port of Trapani in Sicily, where a full search was also scheduled to take place, including below the waterline and in the inside decks. Officials believed the drugs were eventually destined for the European market and the crew of six Syrians was being held in custody on suspicion of international drugs trafficking. Adam sheltered in fishing port
The "Adam" on Nov 13 was directed to the fishing port of Beni Saf, 30 km from Ain Temouchent, and remained there by Nov 17, 2012. The vessel was heading to Morocco to load grain, but had to enter the port of Beni Saf due to bad weather. The fishing port of Beni Saf is not prepared to accommodate such vessels, but the Coastguard ordered the ship to take shelter there. The crew of the ship consisted of six Syrians who were supported aboard their stranded ship.
