Communication error likely to blame for grounding

The cause why the "Zapadnyy" ran aground on a sandbank at the entrance to Silloth harbour was likely a communication error. Also the sandbanks change quite frequently with the tide so it can be quite tricky getting into the port. The ship unloaded its cargo of molasse after it was refloated at about 10:30 p.m. on Sep during high tide. The ship was stuck very close to the rocks but luckily it didn't move any further. Syrup tanker grounded off Silloth

On Sep 13, 2016, around 10 a.m. the "Zapadnyy", carrying carrying molasses, ran aground on a sandbar at the entrance of Silloth port in the Solway Firth. The ship was underway from Bremerhaven via Workington to Silloth when it got stuck following engine damage. A large fishing boat did try to pull it off the sandbank but failed to do so. The tanker refloated with the rising tide at 8 p.m., about 2,5 hours before high tide, and docked in Silloth. Tanker stopped by emergency anchoring

The "Zapadnyy" had to be stopped by an emergency anchoring on June 22, 2011, at 5.40 p.m. to keep the ship from running into the embankment of the Hunte. Unfavorable wind and current conditions had driven the ship off its course when turning into the Hunte. The unladen tanker was underway from Bremen to a shipyard in Elsfleth. In consultation with the Ukrainian captain the pilot ordered the emergency anchoring. The maneuver succeeded. Both the ship and the shore did not suffer damage, and a little time later the ship was able to continue its voyage. In April the tanker had allided with a floating dock of the Lürssen Yard.
