MAGIC SEAS

piracy

The rest of the Filipino crew members of the 'Magic Seas' returned to the Philippines on the evening of July 12. The final batch of 11 repatriates landed at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport, completing the homecoming of all 17 Filipino sailors who were aboard the ship. After the attack five days ago, the crew managed to abandon the vessel before being rescued by the passing container m/v 'Safeen Prism'. They received comprehensive assistance from the government, includubg PHP75,000 in financial aid from the DMW’s AKSYON Fund and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration’s (OWWA) Emergency Repatriation Fund. They were provided with health checks and training vouchers from Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) upon arrival. They will also receive immediate reintegration services, medical check-ups and psychosocial counseling. The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) was also expected to extend an additional P10,000 in cash support. So far, eight Filipino seafarers from the 'Eternity C' have been rescued. However, their return to the Philippines was still being arranged. They needed to be transported to a secure port. The Philippine government continued to monitor the situation and remains in close coordination with international partners to ensure the safety and swift return of affected Filipino nationals. ETERNITY C

piracy

The U.S. Embassy in Yemen has now confirmed that several crew members from the 'Eternity C', which sunk in the Red Sea after being attacked by the Iranian-backed Houthis, have been kidnapped to Yemen by the terrorists. The U.S. called for their immediate and unconditional safe release, with the Houthis continuing to show the world why they were labeled a terrorist organization by the United States. The European Union naval mission in the Red Sea, 'Aspides,' confirmed on July 10 the rescue of 10 crew members from the 'Eternity C,' Part of the crew died and another was held captive by Yemeni militia. The rescueoperation continued into the early hours of July 10, with the "Aspides" mission successfully rescuing three Filipino crew member and a Greek member of the international rescue team. This, combined with a previous rescue operation, brought the total number of people rescued after the attack to ten. For his part, Houthi military spokesman Yahya Sari stated that, following the attack, they had "rescued several crew members, provided medical care," and transferred them "to a safe place." Following a similar rocket-propelled grenade attack that sank the bulk carrier 'Magic Seas' the day before, the Operation Atalanta, the European Union's naval mission to combat piracy in the Indian Ocean, intervened to rescue the 22 crew members. The Houthis claimed responsibility for the attack on the vessel, which they said was en route to the port of Umm al-Rashrash. According to the Houthis, the vessel was struck with an unmanned boat and six ballistic and cruise missiles. One missile struck the cargo hold closest to the ship’s superstructure, creating a hole in the cargo hold with damage extending to the bridge. Two other holes were visible on the vessel’s hull near the waterline. The vessel eventually sannk stern-first with an inflated life raft visible nearby. A Houthi special forces unit was allegedly deployed post-strike to rescue some of the crew members, provide medical care, and transport them to shore. The terrorists claimed the strike was carried out after the ship’s operators resumed dealings with Israeli ports and ignored direct warnings from the Houthis. Following the sinking of the 'Magic Seas', the bulk carrier now has become the fourth ship to have been sunk by the Houthi terrorists since the escalation began, after the 'Rubymar' and the 'Tutor'. ETERNITY C

piracy

Two security companies, which have been searching for survivors from the 'Eternity C', have decided to call off the search for the 10 still missing sailors on the evening of July 13. Four crew members were killed during the attack, while 21 surviving crew members and armed guards fled the ship after the firefight. Of these, 10 were later rescued by security companies and passing ships, several of them after spending more than 48 hours in the water. Another crew member is believed to have died, while six were reportedly taken hostage by Houthi terrorists. The fate of the last four crew members is unknown, and the search for them has now been called off. The Houthi terrorits attacked the 'Eternity C' because it allegedly has ties to Israel, despite the fact that it was Greek-owned and registered in Liberia. Israel has called on the US to resume its airstrikes against Houthi targets in Yemen, in response to the sinking of the 'Eternity C' and the possible kidnapping of six crew members. The Houthi terrorists were believed to be holding six of the 'Eternity C’s complement of 22 crew and three guards. On July 10 the rescuers have pulled three more crew members and a security guard alive from the Red Sea waters, where the bulk carrier was sunk. They said the Houthi militants were holding some of the crew who were still missing. “These are blameless victims who were simply doing their job. Seafarers should be able to work safely at sea. Instead, they are being unfairly forced into the firing line,” the UK-based Seafarers’ Charity association said. Four crew members were believed to have been killed in the attacks. The 'Eternity C' was first hit on July 7 with sea drones and rocket-propelled grenades fired from speed boats. Following a second attack on the morning of July 8, the crew members were forced to jump into the water. Rescuers have been searching for survivors since the morning of July 9. A total of 10 survivors have been rescued so far, among them eight Filipino crew members, one Indian national and one Greek security guard. The four people rescued on the morning of July 10 had spent nearly 48 hours in the water. The search for survivors was to be continued until all persons have been accounted for. 11 people were still missing. All ships passing the area have been asked to assist in the search. The vessel’s operator, Cosmoship Management, said the ship had delivered a cargo for the UN World Food Program to Berbera and was sailing in ballast condition to Jeddah for refueling at the time of the attack.
