ST HELENA
The Terra Nova Expeditions plans to turn the former RMS 'St. Helena' into an expedition cruise ship, in order to offer “authentic small-ship adventures” in Antarctica. The company plans to start operations in late 2026. In addition to the former ship that linked the St. Helena archipelago with South Africa in the past, Terra Nova plans to operate a tall ship named the 'Icebird', which will be the first sailing expedition vessel, featuring an ice-enforced aluminum hull. The 'St Helena' has undergone an extensive refurbishment and renovation in 2022, which saw an investment of eight million pounds. The ship is currently anchored off Khor Fakkan. It had served the British overseas territory of Saint Helena for nearly three decades before being retired in 2018. The former Royal Mail Ship then briefly served as a floating armory in the Gulf of Oman before being sold to the St. Helena LLC and converted into a transportation hub for a circuit of SUV races. The Terra Nova’s inaugural sailing is currently scheduled for Dec 2026, with the 'St. Helena' embarking on an expedition cruise from Ushuaia.
JUAN J SISTER
On the website apolloduck.com, dedicated to the purchase and sale of used vessels of various types, the "Juan J. Sister" has been listed for sale at €22 million. The broker is listed as the intermediary by the New York-based broker Lager Maritime Corp. Although the broker states that the ferry is available for immediate delivery, it will have to wait until the 2025 tender period, as is the case with the ferry "Fortuny," sold to Fred Olsen for delivery next October.
ARATERE
The 'Aratere' will make its final sailing from Picton on Aug 18 at 11 a.m., after 26 years of service. Major infrastructure work in Picton will then commence to prepare for the arrival of new rail-enabled ferries in 2029. The 'Kaiārahi' is returning from dry-dock in Singapore to replace the 'Aratere' after completing the scheduled maintenance. No booking changes will be required for freight customers or passengers as a new two-ship timetable is already in place. Switching from three ships to two ships, the 'Kaitaki' and the 'Kaiārahi', will have a big impact on staff, passengers and freight. The capacity of the two new ferries will be larger than the current fleet of three ships as a necessary step towards a more efficient and sustainable future. The 'Aratere' crew will send the ship off in a private event in early September.
DVADESETPRVI MAJ
A few days ago, the Crnogorska plovidba put both of its ships, the "Kotor" and the "Dvadesetprvi maj", on the used ship market, because at the initiative of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs, which claimed that the state allegedly no longer had any legal possibility to support this 100% state-owned company to maintain liquidity, the Government made a decision to urgently sell both of Crnogorska's ships. The "Kotor" has beem detained in Tyne on Aug 4, 2025. The 'Dvadesetprvi maj' has been anchored off Laem Chabang in pos. 13° 12' N 100° 50' E since its arrival from Yeosou on Aug 3.
