IRIS
The sanctioned 'Iris' (ex 'North Sky') passed through the Kara Gate entering Russia’s Northern Sea Route on June 24, likely heading for the Arctic LNG 2 plant. The move came after the vessel spent months in ballast idling in the Barents Sea. The vessel is currently displaying Sabetta as destination on AIS; possibly a ruse. A visit by a blocked LNG carrier to the unsanctioned Yamal LNG project would be a highly unusual and potentially risky move by project owner Novatek. For much of the past nine months a dozen sanctioned LNG carriers have remained largely idle and scattered across the Barents Sea on the European side and the Sea of Japan in the Far East, waiting for Arctic sea ice to recede.

PONIENTE JET
The 'Poniente Jet'' with 48 passengers and 15 crew members on board, allided with the quay while docking at the Port of Ceuta on June 21, 2024, at around 3 p.m., after having left Algeciras at 1:30 p.m. Damage to the bow and the port facilities remained minor, no injuries were reported. The ship finally arrived at its usual berth with the help of a tug, harbour pilots, and a Civil Guard vessel, which brought the ferry closer to the dock. The ship was scheduled to depart again for Algeciras at around 3:30 p.m., but ultimately the sailing was cancelled. The ship has been operating the Algeciras-Ceuta route for the past couple of weeks, replacing the 'Levante Jet', which was withdrawn due to a technical stop. BAYESIAN
The salvage of the mast of the s"Bayesian," began on June 24 in the waters off the fishing village of Porticello near Palermo. The 75-meter-long mast is to be raised to the surface within three days, according to the London-based company TMC, which has been tasked with salvaging the yacht. The mast, which was severed last week and left on the seabed, is being salvaged using the floating crane platform "Hebo Lift 2." Judiciary authorities were continuing to investigate the causes of the accident. In addition to the loss of human life, the cause of the accident is at great expense. According to rough estimates, insurers will have to raise at least $150 million. After the "Bayesian" was successfully raised on June 21and carefully placed on a steel cralde in the port of Termini Imerese, the public prosecutor's office and experts now have access to the wreck, which will be thoroughly examined in the coming days. Plans include inspections of the hull. However, access to the ship's interior will not be possible for about two weeks for safety reasons, as toxic gases may have formed during the long period under water. At the same time, the fuel tank, which still contains approximately 18 tons of diesel, is being emptied in a delicate process. Experts want to clarify key questions. One hypothesis is that a hatch in the deck was open, allowing water to enter the ship. However, the wreckage revealed that this hatch was closed. The goal now is to secure evidence and document any design flaws, as well as clarify the cause of the accident. The investigation is currently targeting the New Zealand captain and two crew members for possible negligence. They are alleged to have ignored storm warnings and taken themselves to safety while abandoning passengers, when the yacht of the British billionaire Mike Lynch sank in a storm near Porticello on the night of Aug 19, 2024, in a kind of mini-tornado.
STENA FUTURA
The Stena Futura, the first of Stena Line's new hybrid ferries built by the China Merchants Jinling Shipyard, Weihai, for the Irish Sea, has successfully completed its sea trials on the Yellow Sea off Weihai in June 2025. The vessel is scheduled to enter service on the Belfast-Heysham route in late summer. The sea trials tested the vessel at sea to demonstrate proper operation and ensure that all systems are fully functional and meet agreed specifications. The tests were covering areas such as engine performance and endurance, fuel consumption, navigation and radio equipment, emergency systems, speed tests, maneuverability, engine and thruster tests, and safety tests. Once in service, the 'Stena Futura' and its sister ship, the 'Stena Connecta', will increase cargo capacity on the Belfast-Heysham route by 40 percent. The two hybrid ferries are equipped to run on methanol fuel and play a key role in Stena Line's sustainability efforts. The ships are also equipped with technologies that enable the use of battery propulsion and shore power when available. NAVASHINO
On June 23, 2025, the 'Navashino', carrying a cargo of wheat, ran aground of the Volga River along the Balakhna cargo route at kilometre mark 874. No injuries were reported. The Nizhny Novgorod Transport Prosecutor's Office started conducting an inspection of compliance with the requirements of the legislation on navigation safety.
MSC ELSA 3
The contract with T&T Salvage to extract oil from the bunker tanks of the 'MSC Elsa 3' around 14.6 nautical miles off Thottappally harbour in Alappuzha, has been terminated by the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) as they lacked expertise in removing the oil from a ship which is at a depth of 54 metres. The move of the shipping firm has raised doubts about their intention as T&T had brought expert divers from Singapore and South Africa for oil extraction and had successfully sealed the leaks in the oil bunker pipeline. The Director General of Shipping had issued a notice to the shipping firm on June 10 setting a 48-hour deadline for oil extraction. The diving team had completed capping and plugging of the fuel oil tanks of the sunken vessel Elsa 3 aided by diving support vessel 'Seamac III' on June 12. The diving support vessel had returned to Kochi for installation of saturation diving system to aid the diving operations. The shipment had arrived and was under customs clearance. The ship owner had sought extension of time to start oil extraction citing adverse weather conditions. They had informed the DG Shipping that it was difficult to extract oil from the vessel due to monsoon turbulence. The hot tapping of oil from the bunker was a complex operation and the limited weather windows made it a challenging task. The MSC was now in search of a new salvage agency and have promised to start the operations once the weather improves.
MORNING MIDAS
The salvors, Resolve Marine, have reported that the 'Morning Midas' sank in international waters in the North Pacific. The damage caused by the fire, compounded by heavy weather and subsequent water ingress, caused the vessel to sink on June 23 at around 4.35 p.m. LT (UTC -9) on a water depth of approximately 5,000 metres, 360 nautical miles from land. The vessel was transporting 3,048 vehicles, including approximately 70 fully electric and 681 hybrid models. The fire reportedly originated on a deck housing electric vehicles. The vessel also had on board 350 metric tons of marine gas oil (MGO) and 1,530 metric tons of very low sulfur fuel oil (VLSFO)- The Coast Guard has concluded its response to the fire after it received notification that the vessel had capsized at 5:35 p.m. There were no reports of visible signs of pollution at this time. The Coast Guard was monitoring the situation and remained in close contact with the Zodiac Maritime, the manager of the 'Morning Midas'. The two salvage vessels 'Garth Foss' and 'Salvage Worker' remained on scene and were conducting continuous assessments of the area with pollution response equipment onboard to respond to any potential signs of pollution. The oil spill response vessel 'Endeavour' was en route from Dutch Harbor and expected to arrive on scene on June 26, being equipped with additional pollution response equipment including an oil spill containment and recovery system. All operations continued to prioritise the safety of personnel and the protection of the marine environment in order to ensure a swift and effective response to any potential signs of pollution.” There were no reported injuries during the response. Zodiac Maritime’s public information spokesperson can be contacted at media@navigateresponse.com or by phone at 44-207-283-9915 or 65-6222-6375.
ASTORIA
The 'Astoria' will probably be picked up in Rotterdam next week with the own tug of the Belgian scrapyard Galloo. That depends on when all the fittings are off the ship and when the tug is available. It is currently still active on another offshore project of the company. The towing job is also weather-dependent. The opening bid of 200,000 Euros immediately turned out to be a hit at the public sale in the Rotterdam court on June 17. There is still an outstanding invoice of almost 450,000 Euros in unpaid port fees. Galloo will also pay that, plus an additional, unspecified amount,. ‘All outstanding debts must be paid in connection with the right of retention before we can bring the ship to Ghent.’Because the ship sailed under the Portuguese flag, it has to be broken up at a European-approved recycling yard. Normally, these types of larger ships go to Turkey or Asia, countries where environmental standards are much lower, and the wages too.’ The dismantling of the 'Astoria' will be work -intensive, The 350 cabins, the public areas, such as playrooms and restaurants will have to be manually demolished. The dismantling of the rest of the ship will follow. That will certainly take a few months. Galloo expects that 12,000 tons of material, including metals, wood, glass and plastics, will be collected. The company expects to recycle ‘more than 97% of that into renewable raw materials.
KEOYOUNG SUN
At least nine people were killed when the 'Keoyound Sun' sank, South Korea's foreign ministry said on March 21. Two South Korean nationals were among the dead. The Japanese coastguard has rescued an Indonesian crew member, and that another member of the crew of 11 was still missing. A damaged free fall lifeboat was later retrieved, after having come lose from the wreck, and stored at a small fishing harbor near Mokpo. It obviously had spent some time in the sea before being brought ashore, and was showing significant damage, meaning that it remained on the ramp when the vessel capsized. BETIM
The 'Betim',while being docked at the Chorao Island ramp, sank on June 23, 2025, due to one of its tanks being flooded with water. The issue may have arisen from water not being properly drained from the tanks. The air tanks are at the bottom of the vessel to maintain the buoyancy of the ferryboat. Despite the efforts of the fire brigade and large water pumps being deployed, the vessel could not be kept aflloat. Three two-wheeler vehicles belonging to the ferry staff submerged with the ferry. Local authorities were expected to initiate a probe into the circumstances that led to the ferry's sinking.
