JAGUAR

Misc. for ports and Vessels

There was a major incident off the coast of Estonia in the Gulf of Finland on May 14, 2025, as the Estonian Navy attempted to detain the'Jaguar', operated by the Russian shadow fleet and sailing under the flag of Gabon. With the Estonian Defense Force and Border Guard deploying an AgustaWestland AW139 Helicopter, M28 Skytruck Maritime Patrol Aircraft, and an EML Raju Patrol Boat to intercept and halt the ship, which refused to follow orders to halt or change course towards Estonia. The Russian Air Force eventually deployed a Su-35S to fly over the tanker in an attempt to scare away the Estonians, who in the process violated Estonia’s Airspace over the Gulf of Finland. The tanker appeared to be anchored near the Island of Gogland in the eastern Gulf of Finland and subsequently proceeded to Russian waters and anchored near Gogland Island before proceeding towards Primorsk with an ETA as of May 15. MARIA DEYMANN

Casualty

On May 14, 2025, at 2.36 p.m. a fuel spill occurred during cargo operations of the 'Maria Deymann' at the Bominflot Bunker Station in Kiel- Wik. The tank barge had just arrived in Kiel from the Brunsbüttel oil port with fresh fuel at around 1 p.m. Immediately after the spill occurred, the bunker station staff initiated measures to contain the oil film. The Kiel Fire Department also arrived on site and assessed the extent of the spill .In coordination with the police and the environmental agency, no action was taken to combat the spill, as only a few liters of oil and a very thin film of oil on the water were involved. The amount was ultimately so small that the use of special wipes on the water surface was sufficient. The so-called sorbent wipes act like blotting paper and absorb the oil floating on the water. No oil booms were required. The water police filed a complaint for water pollution. Ship traffic on the waterway was not affected.

BAYESIAN

Casualty

The UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) has released an interim report detailing the sinking of the 'Bayesian' off Sicily’s northern coast on Aug 19, 2024, approximately 0.5 nautical miles southeast of Porticello, which revealed critical stability issues that may have contributed to the disaster. The yacht was found to be vulnerable to high winds when in specific conditions – particularly when motoring with sails lowered, centreboard raised, and in ‘loaded arrival’ condition (i.e. 10% consumables on board). These vulnerabilities were not documented in the vessel’s stability information book and were unknown to both the owner and crew. The technical analysis showed that wind speeds exceeding 63.4 knots on the beam could potentially capsize the vessel, and once the yacht heeled beyond 70.6 degrees, recovery was impossible. The Met Office study confirmed that hurricane-force winds exceeding 64 knots were present during the accident. The weather conditions had shown warning signs. Early Italian forecasts had predicted intense rain and thunderstorms with strong wind gusts, and at 9 p.m. UTC on Aug 18, a gale warning was issued for the region. Local weather stations recorded a sudden wind increase from 5 to 41 knots just minutes before the accident. At 03.55 a.m., a crew member documented the approaching storm on social media. By 03.57 a.m., both the 'Bayesian' and the nearby yacht 'Sir Robert Baden Powell' began dragging their anchors in deteriorating weather conditions. The situation escalated at 04.06 a.m., when the wind suddenly increased to over 70 knots. The 'Bayesian' violently heeled to 90 degrees starboard in less than 15 seconds, causing generators to fail and throwing people and objects across the deck. While the extreme winds were sufficient to capsize the yacht, once it heeled beyond 70 degrees, the situation became irrecoverable. Despite rescue efforts by crew members, including the deployment of emergency beacons and a liferaft, seven people – six guests and one crew member – lost their lives in the accident. The survivors were eventually rescued by the tender from the 'Sir Robert Baden Powell' after responding to distress flares. The investigation is ongoing, with criminal proceedings being conducted in parallel by Italian authorities. The MAIB noted that a full examination of the wreck, once salvaged, will provide crucial information about the vessel’s condition at the time of the accident. The MAIB’s ongoing investigation will focus on multiple aspects, including the yacht’s design, stability, escape routes, operation, and emergency procedures. The findings of this interim report are considered indicative pending the completion of the full investigation. The results will be refined as the investigation proceeds, and more information becomes available.

MSC ANTONIA

Casualty

The 'MSC Antonia', en route from Marsaxlokk to Jeddah, ran aground on the Eliza Shoals in pos. 19° 23' N 039° 56' E in the Red Sea approximately 100 nautical miles west of Jeddah on May 10, 2025. GPS spoofing has been suspected to be the cause of the deviation. The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) had posted a warning on May 9 regarding incidents of multiple vessels experiencing electronic interference and disruptions while sailing in the Red Sea around the areas of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and Port Sudan. They warned it was affecting navigation systems and requiring vessels to rely on backup methods. Accordingly, the track of the 'MSC Antonia' on AIS appeared to be highly erratic, likely due to the GPS interference. Sudan. The container ship remained stuck as of May 14 with a list to port side. Tugs were called to refloat it. Marine claims specialists warned of a likely general average and the salvage operations creating additional financial implications for cargo owners.
