DEFIANT

Casualty

Coast Guard crews from across two districts worked together to assist the 'Defiant' with three crew aboard, which was disabled about 95 nautical miles west of Newport, Oregon. The Coast Guard Cutter 'Alder', an Air Station Sacramento C-27 Spartan aircrew, an Air Station North Bend MH-65 Dolphin aircrew, and a lifeboat from the Station Yaquina Bay responded to the De vessel, after it reported on Aug 10, 2025, at 6:42 a.m. that it was disabled, adrift and in need of assistance. Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Columbia River and Coast Guard Northwest District coordinated with Coast Guard Pacific Area to launch the two aircrews, which delivered fresh drinking water, a radio, and a dewatering pump to the vessel at 6:40 p.m. Because of the distance offshore, Coast Guard Southwest District watchstanders directed the 'Alder' to tow the 'Defiant' towards the shore. The cutter arrived on Aug 12 at 11:07 a.m., established a towing connection and pulled the vessel about 80 miles closer to land. On Aug 13 at 10:56 a.m., about 15 miles from Newport, the tow was transferred to the lifeboat of the Station Yaquina Baywhich brought the 'Defiant' safely into port. X-PRESS PEARL

Casualty

X-Press Feeders as the former operator of the 'X-Press Pearl', has challenged the recent Sri Lankan Supreme Court ruling that ordered the company to pay an initial $1 billion in damages within one year related to the vessel’s casualty. The judgment, handed down in late July 2025, has been called by the London P&I Club “an extraordinary and deeply troubling turn of events” that potentially undermined fundamental principles of maritime law. At the heart of the dispute was the continued detention of the vessel’s master, who has been unable to leave Sri Lanka for 4,5 years due to a court-ordered travel ban. X-Press Feeders noted that despite offering to deposit the maximum possible fine for the charges he faced, he was still separated from his family and unable to resume his life or career.

KM SABUKNUSANTARA 89

Casualty

On Aug 10, 2025, at around 8:30 p.m., WITA, a pilot boarded the 'Sabuk Nusantara 89' to guide the vessel into the Samarinda shipping channel at buoy 3. At9 p.m.,the vessel planned to pass the tugs 'Biak 10' and 'SCP 01', which were towing the barge 'Layar Jaya 07'. However, weather conditions deteriorated with strong winds reaching approximately 25 knots accompanied by strong currents, making maneuvering difficult. At about9,30 p.m. while the passing the 'SCP 01' and the 'Layar Jaya 07', the 'Sabuk Nusantara' made contact with the barge due to the combination of strong winds and currents that made the vessel difficult to control. The barge’s towing line struck the propeller of the ferry, causing a total engine failure. Losing propulsion, the vessel was unable to maintain position and again was in collision with the 'Layar Jaya 07', resulting in a dent of approximately 20 centimetres length above the waterline. The tugs continued the voyage after replacing the towing line. At 10 p.m., the. 'Sabuk Nusantara 89' dropped anchor in a safe location to ensure smooth navigation in the channel, while awaiting the evacuation of the passengers on the morning of Aug 11 in safe condition. The KN 'Miang Besar' was deployed to evacuate the passengers and transfer them to the the patrol boat 'KNP 373'. Communication was made with the 'Sabuk Nusantara 89', regarding towing preparations by the tug 'Sapaku' to move the vessel to the front of the Muara Pegah pilot station for repairs.
