HOLCIM PRB SOLO SAIL

Casualty

Just two minutes after the start of the Ocean Race Europe in Kiel.on Aug 10, 2025, a collision occurred between the Swiss team "Holcim-PRB" skippered by Rosalin Kuiper (Netherlands) and the Italian team "Allagrande Mapei Racing" skippered by Ambrogio Beccaria (Italy). Just two minutes after the start of the Ocean Race Europe, a collision occurred between the Swiss team "Holcim-PRB" skippered by Rosalin Kuiper (Netherlands) and the Italian team "Allagrande Mapei Racing" skippered by Ambrogio Beccaria (Italy). Both boats sustained such severe damage from the collision that they had to return to the starting port in Kiel. On the Italian racing yacht "Mapei," both the headsail and the mainsail were shredded and torn. On the "Holcim-PRB," holes were visible in the side of the boat. Damage to the long carbon tubes (outriggers) and the upper shrouds of the Mapei are possible. "That's a big problem," the Italian complained. While Team Mapei left the boat at the Blücher Bridge, Rosalin Kuiper and her team at Holcim were already working at full speed. The racing yacht was transferred to the Kiel Canal on thr Sunday evening and is now in Knierim's shipyard. Work on the Holcim's hull has already begun there. During the repair, there is close coordination with the Holcim team regarding the exchange of data for creating the mold for the damaged hull. Work continues into the night. The goal is to return to the race from Portsmouth, which the five remaining teams, including Team Malizia with skipper Boris Herrmann, hope to achieve after the start in Kiel around midweek. This would be possible if the boats take the shortcut via the Kiel Canal. The mast does not need to be lowered, and the boats can travel at a maximum speed of 12 kilometers per hour.

CHARM C

Casualty

In an accident at the Wilhelmshaven container terminal, five empty containers fell into the Jade River during unloading operations of the 'Charm C' on the afternoon of Aug 9, 2025.No one was injured. Port operations have been suspended. Initial investigations indicated that the cause was a technical defect. As a result, two of the containers remained partially connected and became jammed during lifting. This caused additional containers to tip over, the water. Two of the containers that fell into the Jade River were recovered on the same day. Three others partially sank near the shore and still need to be recovered. This could possibly take until Aug 12. Sea-going vessels have been banned from leaving the port until the containers can be located. Only the area of the container terminal at JadeWeserPort is affected. However, shipping traffic on the Jade River remained unaffected, according to the waterway police. There is currently no evidence of water pollution. The container ship involved was not damaged by the incident.

EAGLE S

piracy

The Deputy Prosecutor General of Finland confirmed on Aug 11 that charges have been brought against the captain and the first and second officers of the 'Eagle S', related to the damage to five undersea cables on Dec 25, 2024. The captain, a Georgian national, along with the two officers of Indian nationality, were charged with aggravated criminal mischief and aggravated interference with communications. The charges also included alternative indictments. Further details could be released by the District Court when the hearings begin. The investigation showed that the tanker departed the Ust-Luga terminal with a cargo of oil products. On Dec 25, they believed the vessel dragged its anchor on the seabed for about 90 kilometres, damaging the five cables. The prosecutors report in addition to the critical interruption of services, the companies incurred costs of at least €60 million for the repairs. The defendants have denied that they committed the offences for which they are being charged. Further, they have also questioned Finland’s jurisdiction. They contended the country lacks the right to bring the charges as the damage happened in international waters. The three individuals have been detained in Finland since the incident occurred. Finnish authorities originally has detained nine individuals, instructing them not to leave Finland, but later focused on the three top officers from the tanker. The Helsinki District Court will set a date for the hearing of the case. If necessary, it will also resolve the issue of Finnish jurisdiction.

RAFFAELE RUBATTINO

Casualty

On Aug 10, 2025, a fire broke out in the engine room of the ' Raffaele Rubatino' and rendered the ship unmanageable, requiring the assistance of two tugs to reach the port of Naples. No injuries were reported on board. The ferry had departed from Palermo and was headed for Naples with 155 passengers and numerous vehicles in the hold. The fire, which broke out while the ship was about 15 miles from the Neapolitan port, was promptly extinguished by the crew, but the damage left the ship unable to navigate unassisted. The captain issued a mayday call via radio, triggering a rescue operation coordinated by the Naples Port Authority. Two patrol boats arrived on the scene, while firefighting and medical teams were preparing on the dock for the disembarkation, scheduled for the evening. Two tus departed from the port of Naples to tow the ship into port, while the Port Authority asked vessels in the area to approach the 'Raffaele Rubattino' to provide assistance if necessary. Meanwhile, another ferry, the 'GNV Auriga', also from Palermo, and two Coast Guard vessels had arrived near the drifting vessel. The two tugs departed from Naples and hooked and began towing it toward port. The captain of the vessel reported that there was no need to evacuate the passengers. The crew's quick response helped contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to other areas of the ship.

HAV GROUPER

Misc. for ports and Vessels

The Federal Police vessel "Bad Bramstedt" sent a boarding team of federal police officers to the "Hav Grouper" on Aug 9, 2025. The ship typically travels between North Sea ports and the Baltic States. However, in July, the 34-year-old vessel spent five days in Kaliningrad, Russia. On the subsequent voyage from Liepaja to Kiel, the "Hav Grouper" performed unusual maneuvers at low speed south of the Swedish island of Gotland on Aug 7. These maneuvers took place in an area that also houses underwater cables. Following the incidents in the spring, when the Federal Police stopped a suspicious freighter in Kiel following a cable failure near Gotland, these particularly sensitive sea areas are being monitored by numerous naval units, coast guard vessels, and drones. Any suspicious maneuvers by merchant vessels are to be immediately recorded and evaluated. The Danish Navy initially observed the freighter, which was eventually taken over by the Federal Police. The patrol vessel "Bad Bramstedt" slowly followed the freighter from Gedser through the Fehmarn Belt to its anchorage off Kiel. The Federal Police inspected the "Hav Grouper" on Aug 9 at 11 a.m. as part of the "original performance of duties under the Federal Police Act." The authorities have not commented on the suspicion of sabotage. The Kiel Water Police were also on site with the patrol boat "Sprotte" and conducted an inspection in accordance with Marpol regulations. The inspections were completed in just under two hours. Customs also participated in the operation.
