The 'CP 311' rescued a single hand sailor of Spanish nationality who had set of with the 12-m-yacht 'Black Pit' on April 11, 2024, from Crete towards Sicily. After receiving an information on April 19 from the MRCC in Piraeus and acquiring a satellite signal indicating the possible presence of the yacht 110 miles from Cape Spartivento, about 200 km from the Calabrian coast, the Italian Coast Guard, coordinated by the Maritime Directorate of Reggio Calabria, started an SAR operation involving a plane taking off from Catania, the 'CP 311' from Roccella Jonica and two merchant ships, which diverted to the area to search the vessel. Amid very bad weather conditions, 40 knots of wind and worsening seas, the "Black Bit" was finally spotted disabled and adrift with a broken mast by the Coast Guard aircraft. The lone sailor managed to send out light signals to be identified. In the middle of the night, the 'CP 311' reached the yacht and took the man on board. After the initial treatment provided on board the patrol boat, the sailor was dropped off at the port of Roccella for further medical treatment. Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0XhKpXp-YDE

HAYRIYE ANA
The 'Hayriye Ana', en route from Istanbul to A Coruna, was in collision with the 'EF Olivia' ( IMO: 9252735), en route from Hamburg to Augusta, 14 nautical miles from Capo Passero on the southeastern tip of Sicily south of the ports of Syracuse and Catania, on the morning of April 22, 2024. Both vessels suffered some minor damage. The hull of the container ship was holed midships at the waterline. Both ships diverted to the Sicilian coast, displaying messages of “restricted maneuverability.” The 'Hayriye Ana' has been cited for several deficiencies on recent inspections. In November 2023, the Chinese authorities listed a dozen deficiencies including issues with the vessel’s VDR, an issue also cited by Greek inspectors in January 2024. The Italian Coastguard mobilized an AW139 helicopter and an Atr42 aircraft as well as a patrol vessel to the scene to monitor the vessel’s progress. So far, no pollution has been reported. The 'EF Olivia' reached Augusta Anchorage at 8.50 p.m. UTC and moored in pos. 37° 12.32' N 015° 12.63' E. NIEUW STATENDAM
About 50 activists from Extinction Rebellion (XR) protested against cruise tourism in Rotterdam on the morning of April 21, 2024. They tried to prevent the docking of the 'Nieuw Statendam' in Rotterdam and delayed the docking for a few minutes. The ship was then able to reach its berth at Cruise Port Rotterdam at 5.50 a.m. UTC. It left the port at 7.30 p.m. en route to Funchal.
MISSUNDE III
Due to the ongoing problems with the 'Missunde III', the prececessor ferry “Missunde II” returned to operation on the Schlei. The State Office for Coastal Protection, National Park and Marine Protection (LKN) had already sold the old ferry for a scrap value of 17,000 Euros. During test operations, various problems arose when using the new, significantly larger ferry. The authority has now bought back the old diesel ferry for around 50,000 Euros. Since last week it has been operating again on its old route between Kosel and Brodersby. 3.3 million Euros were spent on the new ferry with electric propulsion and solar cells on the roof. The new ferry was originally scheduled to start operating in April 2023. But the transfer from the shipyard in Derben initially failed due to delivery difficulties, then due to low water on the Elbe and finally due to flooding on the Schlei. A January opening date was canceled due to additional work on the jetties. The new start date was March 2024. But further problems arose during test sailings which have shown that some modifications were necessary to the ferry's cable guide. The ferry can no longer be docked when the wind is three to four Beaufort. While the old ship, which is 21 meters long, has a load capacity of 22.5 tons, the new, 34 meter long ferry can transport 45 tons. so it is almost twice as big. The rope is obviously under heavy strain due to the greater weight. In order to be able to catch the much larger new ferry even in stronger winds and guide it safely to the ramps, additional thicker bollards are required. In order to be able to ram this, a soil report is first required. In addition, another rope will be laid through the Schlei. and the “Missunde III” will also receive bow and stern thrusters. Two rows of dolphins on the route across the Schlei are intended to make maneuvering the ferry easier. To do this, the fairway will have to be narrowed.
LAYAR ANGGUN 8
The 'Layar Anggun 8' which caught fire in the waters of Tanjung Berakit, Teluk Sebong District, on the afternoon of April 16, ran aground at 3.18 p.m. WIB after being abandoned by the crew. The Tanjung Uban Maritime and Coast Guard Base Office (PPLP) together with the KRI were mobilized to the ship, which was stuck in 617″ N 104 30′ 050 E at Tanjung Berakit Bintan. The 'KN.Rantos P210' and 'KN Sarotama P.112' provided assistance at 8 p.m. Also the 'KN.Rantos P210' attended as of April 17. Upon their arrival, the fire was still burning, and smoke could still be seen at the stern of the tanker. The 'KN.Rantos P210' tried to get closer to ship to extinguish the fire, but this attempt failed due to the shallow water. Instead, two rubber boats were deployed to extinguish the fire using an alcon pump. The fire was finally extinguished at 10 p.m., but reignited half an hour later. On April 17 at 1.20 a.m. the fire was still burning, so the KRI 'Lepu 861' also lowered a rubber boat to help extinguish the fire. At 4 a.m. the fire was finally put out. The 'KN Rantos P210', 'KN Sarotama P112' and 'KRI Lepu 861' returned to standby to monitor and secure the ship. From 08.00 a.m. to 11.00 a.m. the remaining embers were extinguished and cooled using an alcohol pump, until it was confirmed that the fire in the accomodation block of on the heavily damaged ship had really been extinguished. DALI
The City of Baltimore on April 22 opposed capping the 'Dali's shipowner’s liability in the Key Bridge collapse. The companies’ actions leading up to the disastrous crash were “grossly and potentially criminally negligent,” the city’s lawyers wrote in a new filing. The 'Dali' was “clearly unseaworthy,” a claim that will have major implications for the companies’ efforts to limit their liability. “For more than four decades, cargo ships made thousands of trips every year under the Key Bridge without incident. There was nothing about March 26, 2024, that should have changed that. But Petitioners, Grace Ocean Private Limited and Synergy Marine Pte Ltd, saw fit to put a clearly unseaworthy vessel into the water. Petitioners’ actions were grossly and potentially criminally negligent. In no way should their liability be limited.” The filing claims that the companies provided the vessel with an “incompetent crew that was inattentive to its duties” and “failed to comply with local navigation customs and/or usage,” failed to properly maintain the vessel and failed to comply with industry standards, among a long list of allegations. Baltimore hired a heavy-hitting lawyer with experience handling maritime disasters and structural collapses to handle its claims related to the Key Bridge collapse. The Maryland Attorney General’s Office also issued a request for proposals for assistant counsel to participate in Key Bridge litigation. The ship is owned by the Grace Ocean Private Limited and managed by Synergy Marine Pte Ltd., which both filed a “limitation of liability” action just days after the crash. The action was aimed at capping the amount of damages the companies could be forced to pay at about $43 million — the value of the 'Dali' and its cargo. The city’s filing ass the first among what were expected to be many objections to the limitation of liability action. The FBI was also conducting a criminal investigation into the accident. The ship reportedly experienced electrical issues before it left port but took off despite of that. Parties with claims against the 'Dali' will have until Sep 24 to file notice in federal court, though there was expected to be a lengthy court fight over whether the owner can successfully cap liability. If the owner had “privity or knowledge” of the issue that caused the crash, or if the ship wasn’t seaworthy before it left port, the limitation of liability action could fail, allowing claimants to pursue bigger monetary awards.

CARNIVAL PARADISE
On April 21, 2024, on the first full day of her current cruise, the 'Carnival Paradise' rescued 27 refugees from Cuba west of the island nation en route to Roatan, Honduras. All of them were brought safely aboard the ship and provided with emergency care, while official authorities were notified regarding the next steps. At approximately 2:30 p.m. the bridge crew spotted a small boat signaling for assistance. The cruise ship immediately turned to render aid, bringing aboard 27 Cuban nationals from the overcrowded boat approximately 20 miles southeast of Los Cajuelos. The small wooden boat was in poor condition, with a makeshift sail. The US Coast Guard Sector Key West was notified, as were Roatan officials. The refugees were to be turned over to authorities as soon as possible, as is standard procedure with these incidents. Because Carnival Paradise was on a scheduled day at sea, the time spent with the rescue operation will not significantly impact the ship’s itinerary. The 'Carnival Paradise' had left the port of Tampa, Florida, on April 20, for the 5-night Western Caribbean sailing. After visiting Roatan on April 22, the ship was scheduled to visit Cozumel, Mexico on April 23 before another day at sea. The cruise will end in Tampa on April 25. At this time, there were no expected changes or delays to the ship’s itinerary or overall schedule. The allision of the 'Isola di Procida' with the Beverello Jetty in Naples on April 19 at around 10.15 a.m. was being investigated by the Coast Guard, while the ship remained stationary in port as of April 22. A gust of wind or a technical accident were the first hypotheses. The ship had on board 163 passengers, including many foreign tourists. On board were also some members of the police force, who were on Capri on surveillance duty on the last day of the G7. Almost all the passengers were already standing and ready to disembark when the ferry crashed into the quay, with the result that many fell, some even down the stairs, ending up on the landing and suffering various injuries. 21 people were transported to the city's hospitals with maxillofacial trauma or injuries, eight more reached the emergency room by their own means. Almost all injuries were considered minor, but a 51-year-old man was in serious condition. 118 health workers, personnel from the Port Authority and the State Police were mobilized.
